God does not force us but gives us the freedom to choose whether or not to follow His statutes. The freedom to obey is one of the blessings of being a Christian. Yet to be a Christian in truth and in Spirit is to choose daily to obey God—chasing after Him and battling our inner man.
According to the law, love is the key to being considered obedient to God. The commandments are beautifully summed up in this: to love one another as we love ourselves. This is not always easy, but it becomes possible when we draw from the unconditional love God shows us—loving us despite our wrongs and mistakes.
We can also call on the Holy Spirit to remind us of this duty throughout the day, especially when people offend us, fail us, or even purposely make life difficult. Instead of reacting in the flesh, let us see these moments as opportunities to demonstrate true Christianity—shining God’s love in a way that may lead others to glorify Him and be drawn to the God we serve.
And what’s in it for us? By calling on the Spirit throughout daily changes we further deepen our relationship with God with would only be beneficial for us. Secondly, we help make the world a better place to live in for ALL of us. By teaching others with a gentle hand how all should be treated, we reduce pain, resist evil, and replace it with love—helping God’s light to spread in a dark world.
